Dartford Crossing Closures Sparks Concern

by Aug 22, 2018Global News

A recent Freedom of Information request has revealed that traffic was halted on the Dartford Crossing more than a thousand times last year.

The Dartford Crossing is used by around 140,000 cars and lorries each day and it is one of the UK’s most crucial freight routes. The northbound tunnels were blocked 1,307 times as over height goods vehicles attempted to make the journey across the River Thames.

Concerns have been raised, as we approach Brexit, that there will need to be a major investment in infrastructure to support the ongoing needs of a global Great Britain, in particular the road network.

The £6bn Lower Thames Crossing which will cross under the River Thames just east of Gravesend and Tilbury, will ease the strain on the Dartford Crossing and lower congestion. However, the new crossing isn’t scheduled to be open until 2027.
